101 Beginning Mandarin Chinese I (also 1010 )
Restricted to students with no previous formal or informal training in Mandarin Chinese. Development of proficiency in receptive and productive skills, and understanding of Chinese culture. Comprehending and creating with the language at the sentence level, and handling simple, everyday, life situations. (Monday and Wednesday 6:00pm-8:00pm)
2010 Intermediate Mandarin Chinese I Prerequisite: CHIN 1020 or equivalent
Continued development of skills in all areas at the sentence level. Begin learning to comprehend and create paragraph-level language, such as factual descriptions and narrations, and handle more complicated everyday, life situations. (Monday and Wednesday 6:00pm-8:00pm)
4900 Newspaper Reading
Topics vary. Special courses on Chinese literature, culture, and language. Designed for advanced Chinese majors and minors. (Monday and Wednesday 1:25pm-2:45pm)
4900 Readings in Modern Chinese Literature

Mandarin Chinese I ( LLLAN 364 )
Learn to speak the language that's spoken by more people as a native tongue than any other language in the world. Focus is on fundamental tones, the usage of Chinese pinyin, and Chinese syntax as we communicate in basic conversational phrases. Discussions of Chinese culture will be integral to our study. We'll also talk about Chinese characters and how they are constructed. Special fee covers The New Practical Chinese Reader and its workbook. No class October 13.

Continue working on pronunciation, syntax, and simple characters as we learn numbers; express likes and dislikes; and address the polite behavior and language for meeting people, making an appointment, accepting or declining an invitation, and conversing about your family and occupation. Chinese manners and culture will continue to be an integral part of our study. If you do not own the texts referenced in Mandarin I, you will be asked to purchase them ($35).
